Stone Coated Steel Metal Roofing

Stone coated steel roofing systems are available in natural colors and offer striking looks paired with the durability of steel panels. Stone coated steel roofing is finished with a thick layer of stone that permanently adheres to a 24 or 26-guage rust resistant steel core. The stone coating offers additional durability and creates a decorative appearance. Stone coated steel roofing is made by coating Galvalume® with stone granules. The stone granules are applied with acrylic polymer adhesives, resulting in a lightweight roofing system reinforced with the strength of steel. Stone coated steel roofing can be installed with or without battens, depending on a home’s specific needs. Battens are an above sheathing ventilation (ASV) roofing system. ASV roofing systems provide above the deck air flow and insulation, mitigating heat transfer from the exterior to the interior of the home, resulting in less energy consumption.

Why Choose Stone Coated Steel

Stone coated steel roofing is an excellent choice for someone that wants all the benefits of metal roofing such as a Class A fire rating, a wind rating of up to 120 mph, Class-4 Hail Impact Resistance, and energy efficiency, but desires a more traditional look for their home. Stone coated steel allows you to have a lightweight and durable metal roof while achieving the distinguished appearance of clay or concrete tile, wood shake, and architectural shingle roofs. Stone coated steel roofing systems are eco-friendly, energy efficient, and allow the option of installing solar panels.

Though they are significantly lighter than their tile, shake, and asphalt shingle counterparts, stone coated steel roofing panels are made to be incredibly durable so that they outlast other roofing materials and will not break, curl, warp, or split. Stone coated steel roofing panels are available in a variety of profiles and feature an interlocking design that only further reinforces the roof, making it more resistant to extreme weather and heavy rain.

Clay tiles are vulnerable to hail, storm debris damage, and cracking. Clay tiles can absorb up to 15% of their weight in water, which adds significantly to the weight of the roof over time. Clay tile roofs require ongoing maintenance and repairs to protect the underlying structure of the building and are susceptible to algae and discoloration. Stone coated steel roofing tiles replicate the vivid detail and dimension of old-world clay tiles while being lightweight and durable. The strong, rust resistant steel core is only strengthened by its fade-resistant stone coating.

Concrete roofing tiles are also beautiful, but their weight requires additional structural support. Despite being made with stone and steel, stone coated steel roofing systems are surprisingly light – typically weighing only 1.5 pounds per square foot. In comparison, standard weight concrete roofing tiles can weigh between 9.5 to 12 pounds per square foot.

Stone coated steel metal roofing can provide the thick-cut edges and deep, distinctive shadow lines of architectural shingles at half the weight of asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are popular due to their lower initial cost, but stone coated steel roofing is more energy efficient and lower maintenance, saving money in the long term. Stone coated steel roofing is a more sustainable, lower-maintenance roofing solution for elegant homes.

Hand-split wood shake roofing is high-maintenance in comparison to stone coated steel roofing. Wood shake roofing is only minimally resistant to impact and moisture. Although distinctive and beautiful, wood shakes gray quickly while exposed to the elements and are highly susceptible to bacteria and fungus. Wood shakes are vulnerable to cupping, splitting, and loosening around fasteners, making them prone to wind uplift whereas the interlocking design of stone coated steel roofing provides shear strength and wind resistance. Stone coated steel roofing requires little maintenance and has excellent color retention capabilities.
